Madeline's engineering project!

Like a real engineer, Ruby had to change her design multiple times to get it to work and be structurally sound!

Odin constructing his contraption for protecting snacks from animals!

Preston's engineering design used camouflage to deter animals from the snacks! Perfect use of Vermont forest colors!

Kali and Adria hard at work on construction!

Liam and Roger explaining to the class how their designs work.

Raheem and Luke mid-contsruction!

Kids practicing walking like deer!

Preston pretending to walk like a bear!

Masks make it even harder to know who is who in winter. It is amazing how well we all adjust. Mrs. Dyer and I have gotten pretty good at identifying kids when only their eyes are visible!

Yusef, Liam, and Odin had some great construction projects going on during exploration time!

We needed some movement on that 0 degree day so we did some yoga as a class. It was a big hit!

Addyson in mountain pose with Luke and Charles in the background.
I think Olivia's done yoga before!
Charles in tree pose.
Yusef stretching his muscles!

The woman who makes the Cosmic Kids Yoga videos is a genius!

Once upon a time, my husband was a yoga instructor which is how I have so many yoga mats!

Addyson, making a snow angel!

Ruby is so focused!

Impromptu project: a few kids decided to try and break through the ice in the stream. Pretty soon everyone wanted in on the action!

Yusef and Charles got inventive with legos.

Addyson, working with stencils.

Adria, organizing and counting erasers.

Math choice time is a time to practice fluency skills, solo or with a partner.

Raheem has really been enjoying Mo Willems' pigeon books!

Odin loves to make intricate towers--this one populated by dinosaurs.

Addyson and Olivia above, and Adria and Luke below, playing Compare to build their adding and number sense skills.

Kali and Odin making bird (squirrel?) feeder. Olivia quickly became the class expert and took over from me and Mrs. Dyer. She taught the others how to do it!

Addyson has become one of our classroom's premier engineers. Every choice time, she makes these elaborate constructions and we all stop by to admire them.

Reading groups look a little different in the time of Covid! Each kid reads with a teacher at least once a day (usually twice) either in a small group or solo. Mrs. Dyer and I take turns with the groups.

Another interesting thing about Covid is the amount of stuff we have to lug back and forth. This was compounded by Valentine's Day and winter. Here you see Yusef, Roger, and Odin sporting some creative ways of getting all those things home on pretty small bodies!

Our Valentine's Day celebration was a huge hit. It was fun to do something that felt to normal!

Adria making Ms. Dyer some tea!
Sometimes we even go inside!

We are learning to read!!!!

Preston trying to make his rice move on his "eardrum" by playing the drum!

Music Class with Mrs. Davenport: we're learning how sound works!

Playing with scarves to experiment with pitch in music class.

Liam and Ms. Kristie doing literacy in the forest!

Liam and Roger trying out the new benches the sixth graders made.
Odin found a red backed salamander under a log.
I love Kali's smile!

Adria and Ruby having a "fire."

The kids were so excited to find this snake in the stream.
Kali's make believe game consisted of getting trapped in this cage and calling for help. Several children immediately resuced her.
Roger fishing.
Odin reading! We moved our reading groups into the forest this week and it was so much fun!
